SA hotelier plans own desalination plant for CT

Cape Town, the Mother City of South Africa and destination to millions of tourists annually, is feeling the effects of Level 6B water restrictions in the face of the relentless drought as tourism figures decline.

“The current situation in Cape Town is going to become the new normal. We’ve got to be responsible as well.” - Tsogo chief operating officer, Ravi Nadasen

Hotels throughout the province are implementing water savings, from removing plugs in baths to fitting water regulators on taps and showerheads and researching reusing waste water.

But Tsogo Sun Holdings Ltd, South Africa’s biggest hotel and casino operator, has gone one step further, much further. The biggest hotelier in South Africa is planning to build its own desalination plant.

The aim is to help supply water to its Cape Town hotels and shield guests from the city’s deepening water crisis.

Tsogo chief operating officer, Ravi Nadasen, says the alternative water source should be in operation for properties including the five-star Westin by early March at the latest, well ahead of the scheduled Day Zero date of 11 May 2018, when most taps will be turned off.

Cape Town residents have been urged to use as little water as possible, with the daily allocation set at 50ℓ per person as of 1 February.

About 1.6 million tourists visit the Cape Town area each year and spend about R40-billion, according to South African Tourism.
